Summary:This paper will examine a special case of the Karafuto?jin in the history of Japanese?Russian relations,focusing on their life and political activities before World War II(hereafter referred to as“WWII“)as well as after their return to mainland Japan in the postwar period. The term“Karafuto?jin”in this paper refers to a group of about 430,000 Japanese citizens who resided in the Japanese colony of Karafuto(presently southern Sakhalin Island in the Far East of Russia)during the pernod of 1905?1945.
