Summary:The article presents a history of Uralic, i.e. Fenno-Ugric and Samoyedic, desriptive and comparative studies in context of the comparative-historical linguistics at all, from beginnings stimulated by pioneering voyages of Normans in the 9th century to summarization of basic lexical and grammatical material of all Uralic languages, completed by Matthias Alexander Castrén in mid of the 19th century.
