Description
Summary:Photo 10: Garnet-bearing, porphyritic amphibolite of the Greenland Cove Member of the Bucksport Formation (Sbgc). In the case of this rock, porphyritic refers to the larger light colored plagioclase feldspar minerals set in a finer grained matrix of hornblende (an amphibole group mineral) and feldspar. The larger feldspar grains are interpreted to represent relict phenocrysts in a volcanic rock prior to metamorphism. The rocks in this member of the Bucksport Formation are interpreted to represent deformed and metamorphosed Late Silurian volcanic rocks of intermediate to mafic composition.
