Summary: | Examination of the tanaidacean fauna of the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench and the Japan Trench, from the surrounding edges of the trench to the hadal depths, revealed 21 new species, belonging to the genera Agathotanais, Akanthophoreus, Carpoapseudes, Cryptocopoides, Fageapseudes, Larsenotanais, Leptognathia, Leptognathiella, Neotanais, Paragathotanais, Pseudotanais, and Siphonolabrum, and 15 of these new species are described in this volume. Five additional species (Forcipatia rotundicauda, Leptognathiopsis langi, Paranarthrura vitjazi, Paranarthrura zevinae, Torquella angularis, and Typhlotanais compactus) are re-described/re-combined. The tanaidacean species richness in the trenches was found to be remarkably higher than in shallow water, although numbers of individuals were rather small; this was compensated for by high taxonomic diversity. |
