There is now strong evidence that physical activity plays an important role in the prevention of stroke. Physical activity on prescription® (PaP), is a method which is now used in care to encourage increased physical activity. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how people who have been affected by TIA experienced physical activity on prescription®, to which extent they followed the recipe and how their physical capacity was affected by the intervention. Methods: Five persons, who have been hospitalized in Piteå älvdals hospital due to TIA, participated in the study. Intervention consisted of ten training weeks, according to the PaP-model. Before and after the intervention the participants filled in a survey about self-rated task level and made a walk test. They also had an activity-diary where they registered their physical activity. After the ten weeks they were interviewed about their experiences of the intervention. Results: The individuals had a positive attitude to PaP but compliance varied among the participants. Analysis of the participants experiences formed the two main categories: safety and motivation, whose latent content was interpreted as "security support and hope for a healthier lifestyle" and "motivation and insight gives power to action and balance". When comparing self rated task level before and after the intervention it showed that four out of five participants had heightened level of activity during the intervention. Conclusions: The PaP-model can intercept patients with TIA and give them confidence and motivation to increase physical activity levels. Frequent followups and flexible care contacts are essential for compliance. More extensive studies are needed in order to draw conclusions regarding the PaP-model effects on physical capacity of people affected by TIA.
