Stresshantering? "Typ gympa. Annars ingenting" : En kvantitativ studie om gymnasieelevers upplevelser om stress

Research is saying that stress is increasing among the youth and girls are more stressed than boys. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding for how upper secondary school students experiences stress, which will be the foundation for working with the student’s health issues in school. What stresses boys and girls and what are the symptoms? How does their school work affected? Does the school help them find methods that reduce stress? 139 students from one school in Northern Sweden answered a questionnaire about their health and experiences of stress. The students were 84 males and 55 females. I analysed the results with help from Ziehe (2003). Ziehe is saying that it is more choices in the world these days, which can be causing stress, and that young people enter the adult world much sooner than before. The results of this study show that upper secondary school students often experience stress and performance anxiety in their school situation, which may vary depending on the individual but also on the basis of gender. In addition to schoolwork these adolescents are worries about the future that stresses them. Another stress factor is the perceptions of demands and expectations. 60 percent of the students have high demands on themselves, and 40 percent think that parents and teachers have high demands on them. As the performance anxiety and stress are becoming increasingly common among high school students, the need for efforts to help students to handle performance anxiety and stress increases.
