Tutkimuksen perusteella maaperän luontaiset ominaisuudet asettavat lierojen esiintymiselle puitteet, joissa viljely muovaa lieroyhteisön rakennetta. Tulosten avulla voidaan entistä paremmin ennakoida lieroyhteisön vastetta viljelytapojen muutoksiin erilaisissa olosuhteissa. Ensimmäinen sovelluskohde on ollut eri maalajeille määriteltyjen lierorunsauksien vertailuarvojen tarkentaminen maatalousneuvonnan käyttämässä viljelymaan laadun arvioinnissa. The aim of this study was to get a comprehensive picture of the distribution and abundance of earthworm species in the arable fields of Finland and to identify the key factors affecting the properties of earthworm communities. Earthworms were sampled in a field survey, which extended from the southern parts of the country to the Arctic Circle. Samples were taken during the autumns 2004 and 2005 using a network of soil monitoring sites established earlier at eleven research stations of MTT Agrifood Research Finland (53 fields in total). According to the results the earthworm fauna of Finnish arable fields consists of nine species: four epigeic species (Lumbricus rubellus, Dendrobaena octaedra, L. castaneus, Dendrodrilus rubidus), four endogeic species (Aporrectodea caliginosa, A. rosea, Octolasion tyrtaeum, Allolobophora chlorotica) and one anecic species (L. terrestris). The three most common species were A. caliginosa, L. terrestris and L. rubellus. On average two species were present in the field while on average four species were found at the field margin. The abundance of earthworms varied from entirely empty sites (three fields) to sites, where the density of earthworms was close to one thousand individuals m-2 and biomass more than 300 g m-2. When the soils, were divided into four textural classes (clays, silts, very fine sands and coarse textured soils), silts and very fine sands had clearly the highest earthworm total abundances. At the time of the sampling the three most common field uses were cereals, grass for silage and pasture. In pastures earthworm total abundance was much higher than under the other field uses. Frequent cereal years in the rotation, which corresponded with frequent tillage, had lowered the total abundance of earthworms in silt soils but increased it in very fine sands. When other sources of variation were taken into account, it was not possible to detect significant differences in earthworm total abundance between the stations situated in different parts of the country. The results show that the inherent variation of soil properties set the general limits where the cultivation modifies the properties of field earthworm communities. v ok MAA MPL Regional variation of field earthworm communities in relation to soil properties and land use |
