Description
Summary:The intensive growth of industry and agriculture may cause contamination of natural and human-made aquatic environments, and may affect not only the health of fish, but also raise safety concerns with regard to fish used for human consumption. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the total bacterial microflora of gills, skin and content of gastrointestinal tract of European eel as indicator of hygienic status of environment and the presence of Salmonella spp., Yersinia spp., and Listeria spp. as possible zoonotic pathogenic agent. The total bacteria count (TBC) varied from 3.4x105 cfu/g to 7.5x106 cfu/g for eel gills samples, from 2.0x103 cfu/g to 6.9x106 cfu/g for gastrointestinal tract samples and from 2.1x104 cfu/g to 1.1x106 cfu/g for skin samples. Enterobacteriaceae was detected at a lower rates and the highest number (1.0x106 cfu/g) was observed for gills samples. All tested eel samples were Salmonella spp., Yersinia spp. and Listeria spp. negative. Eel samples did not contain excessive amount of bacterial microflora and together with negative findings on pathogens like Salmonella spp., Yersinia spp. and Listeria spp. indicate the good hygienic status of the lake from there the eels were originated.
