Data on 10 indicated fish species of 1112 lakes (~ 40 percent of lakes with the area bigger than 0,5 ha) has been collected. Information on indicated fish species inhabiting lakes bigger than 100 ha, 8% lakes of 50-100 ha, 81% lakes of 10-50 ha and 17% lakes of 0,5-10 ha is provided. Considering the potential productivity of different lake types, nearly 260 of them are suitable for recreational fishery. The study also assesses the distribution of valuable fish species in the rivers of Lithuania: river trout (Salmo trutta fario) inhabit ~ 180 rivers, sea trout (Salmo trutta fario) - -70, vimba (Vimba vimba) - ~35, grayling (Thymal-lus thymallus) - -20, barbel (Barbus barbus) - 15, salmon (Salmo salar) - 11, asp (Aspius aspius) - 9, wels (Silurus glanis) - 2 rivers, differing in catchments size and length. In total 22-25 rivers are potentially suitable for recreational fishery. At present, the stock ofthe most valuable fish species is far less than potential. Therefore, fish restocking is the requisite for the successful development of recreational fishery in the inland waters.
