Summary: | A total of 62 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) individuals of both wild and hatchery origins were sampled in order to investigate their mitochondrial DNA variation. The sampled individuals repre-sented the Baltic salmon population ofthe Nemunas River basin. NADH dehydrogenase NDl, ND3/4 and ND5/6 subunits ofmtDNA were amplified and subjected to restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The results obtained were compared with data from previous studies of mtDNA variation in the populations of Atlantic and Baltic salmon. This study supports the eastem origin of Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon. The relationship of the Nemunas salmon population to the postglacial history of the Baltic region is discussed. |
