Summary:Special areas for lynx (Lynx lynx) conservation in Lithuania were selected folowing the European Union requirements. Data on the annual census of lynxes (1970-2000) and on special research (1991-1995) were used. The main criteria for conservation areas were the long-term persistence of local lynx groups certain area, as well as the size of these groups and changes therein. The preliminary list induded six territories from the northern, eastern and western parts of the country with a total area of 177 700 ha. In 1995 and 2000, 56 and 69 lynxes were registered in these territories, and they made up 57% and 80% of the total lynx population in Lithuania, respectively. After the amendments made by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, the final list including seven territories (180 400 ha) was presented to the European Commission.
