Summary: | The Vilkaviškis and Šakiai administrative districts are situated in south-western Lithuania. A total of 15 small mammal species were recorded at eight study sites in these districts during the 1995 and 1999 studies. The most widespread species (frequency of occurrence 75-100%) were Talpa europea, Sorex araneus, S. minutus, Apodemm agrarim, A. flavicollis, Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus arvalis and M. oeconomus. Micromys minutus and Microtus agrestis were detected in four out of eight study sites. Microtus rossiaemeridionalis, Neomys fodiens, Muscardinus avellanarius, Mus musculus and Mustela nivalis were the rarest species during these studies. Wide distribution of M. oeconomus, which earlier was considered as a rare species in Lithuania, should be noted in both districts investigated. The number of small mammal species recorded in a separate study site ranged from seven to 13. At least 10 small mammal species were expected to be registered in each 10x10 km square, but short-term studies are usually not sufficient to achieve such a result. |
