Molecular detection of Mycoplasma spp. in carnivores from Lithuania
Mycoplasma is a genus of self-replicating bacterium. Most of them are responsible for variety of diseases in human, animal, insects and plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Mycoplasma spp. in Carnivores from Lithuania. A total number of 45 animal samples were collected after car accident and by hunters: 31 red fox (Vulpes vulpes), 5 European otter (Lutra lurta), 5 beech marten (Martes foina), 2 common ferret (Mustela putorius), 1 gray wolf (Canis lupus) and 1 raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides). DNA was extracted from the spleen samples, and then used for PCR analysis. PCR was performed using the primers targeting a Mycoplasma sp. 600-bp region of the 16S rRNA gene. Amplification occurred in 5/5 (100 %) of L. lutra, 2/2 (100 %) of M. putorius and 1/5 (20 %) of M. foina. The Mycoplasma were not detected in V. vulpes, C. lupus, N. procyonoides. All positive samples sequences show 94 – 100 % similarity with Mycoplasma sp. Sequence from GenBank.
