The results obtained were compared with data from previous studies of mtDNA variation in the populations of Atlantic and Baltic salmon. This study supports the eastem origin of Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon. The relationship of the Nemunas salmon population to the postglacial history of the Baltic region is discussed.
