After establishing the context of the site the design is developed enabling the design's management and environmental effects to be outlined. At present Christchurch International Airport is the largesUA:-alrport in the South Island and is able to accommodate the largest international aircraft. In addition it services a large general aviation fleet and is a base for United States Antarctic Operations. The airport at Christchurch is vital for the South Island economy and especially for the New Zealand Tourist Industry. Tourist flights link the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes region with North Island tourist centres. There is also considerable trans-Tasman tourist travel and increasing tourist connections to Asia, America and Europe. Statistics from the 1985 Christchurch International Airport Master Plan Indicate considerable growth is forecast for International and domestic passenger movements at Christchurch International Airport over the period to 2005. thus expansions of passenger terminal facilities Is essential to facilitate the 2.5 million domestic and 860,000 International visits yearly, increasing at a rate of 8% each year. Christchurch is at the heart of the South Island's world-acclaimed scenic and recreational attractions, its central location in the South Island makes it a natural distribution centre; - the Christchurch International Airport is Its gateway Doctoral or Postdoctoral Thesis Antarc* Antarctic Lincoln University (New Zealand): Lincoln U Research Archive
