Summary:16th October 1895. The Right Honourable Herbert Henry Asquith (centre, foreground) delivers a speech at the opening of the new Morley Town Hall on 16th October 1895. Born at Croft House on Windmill Hill, Church Street, Morley in 1852, it was fitting that the then Home Secretary of Gladstone's government should be invited to open Morley's landmark building. He later became Prime Minister (1908 - 1916). On opening day Morley was lavishly decorated with floral garlands, banners and streamers. In the evening there was a banquet and a huge display of fireworks. The dignataries were served with Turtle Soup, Turbot, Goose, Sirloin of Beef, Game and Lobster to name but a few delicacies. These were accompanied by Wines, Liquors and Champagne. To the right of Mr. Asquith the Mayor can be seen, Councillor Charles Scarth. The First Town Clerk of Morley, Mr Richard Borrough Hopkins is visible behind Mr. Asquith. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.
