The waterfalls and landscape work to Meanwoodside were carried out by Edward Oates, grandfather of polar explorer Lawrence Oates. Captain Lawrence Oates died in 1912 on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's last expedition to the Antarctic. He walked out into the snow in a valiant but futile attempt to help the rest of the party conserve their resources, as all died.
