Description
Summary:In March 2007, the fragment of a whalebone was found on the Bremen Teerhof within the framework of an archaeological excavation. The find's archaeological situation permits its relatively precise dating in the period between the mid seventeenth century and 1709. An archaeozoological investigation led to its identification as a North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis). Various scenarios as to the find's origins are discussed on the basis of historical sources. To provide the reader with the necessary background knowledge, a look is taken at the history of whaling in Bremen during this period. begutachtet (peer reviewed) Veröffentlichungsversion peer reviewed Published Version
