During routine check-ups on nine year old children in an elementary school in Reykjavik, 159 children were asked about some factors affecting their social well being. The study was done in three different school years (1984-85, 1986-87 and 1989-90). The school nurse interviewed the children using a standardized questionnaire. The results showed that 75-80% of mothers worked full time or part-time outside the home. There was little difference between the school years in that respect. In up to 43% of cases (range 20-43%) the children were alone before or after school for the whole time or part of it. This figure was lowest in 1989-90, which can be attributed to rearrangement of school hours. Over 94% had breakfast daily and almost all had lunch. During one school year (1986-87) about 40% of the children prepared their own breakfast. This figure had lowered to 16% three years later. 86% of the children took vitamins daily. The results from a study like this will help in organizing health care in schools. Á síðustu 30 árum eða svo hefur það færst í vöxt bæði hérlendis og erlendis að foreldrar vinni bæði utan heimilis. Í tengslum við læknisskoðanir í Fossvogsskóla voru kannaðir félagslegir hagir allra níu ára barna í skólanum á þriggja ára tímabili, samtals 159 börn. Af mæðrum unnu 75-80% að hluta eða fulla vinnu utan heimilis. Lítill munur var á milli ára. Í allt að 43% tilvika (svið 20-43%) voru börnin alein heima fyrir eða eftir skóla eða hluta af þeim tíma og í nokkrum tilvikum gættu þau jafnvel yngri systkina. Yfir 94% borðuðu daglega morgunverð og nær öll hádegisverð. Skólaárið 1986-87 sögðust 40% barnanna taka til morgunverðinn sjálf. Þetta hlutfall hafði lækkað niður í 16% skólaárið 1989-90.
