Neðst á síðunni er hægt að nálgast greinina í heild sinni með því að smella á hlekkinn View/Open A retrospective study on 250 referred patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD) was performed at the outpatient clinic, St. Joseph's Hospital in Reykjavik. The geographical distribution of the permanent residence was unequal. From Reykjavik and Reykjanes came 84% of the patients. The mean age of the patients was 72.6 years (range 47-94 years). The prevalence increased with age for both sexes. Females outnumbered males. A difference in prevalence rates of AMD was found between males and females, even after the fact that females outnumber males in this age group has been taken into consideration. Atrophic AMD was found in 56.0% of the eyes and the predominant findings were drusen and pigmentary changes in combination. Exudative AMD was found in 40.6% of the eyes and the predominant finding was disciform scarring. No difference of AMD was found between right and left eyes. Of the patient group 93.2% had AMD in both eyes, 72% had visual acuity 1.0 -0.5 in the better eye. The exudative form presented with visual acuity 6/60 or less in 55.5% of the eyes. Only 7.2% of the eyes with the atrophic form had visual acuity 6/60 or less. Fortyone patients (16.8%) were treated with red krypton or blue-green argon laser and after average 18.8 months follow up, the visual acuity was the same or better in 24 patients (58.5%). Samkvæmt rannsókn Guðmundar Björnssonar á blindu á Íslandi er ellihrörnun í augnbotnum (age related macular degeneration) algengasta orsök lögblindu (sjón 6/60 eða minni á betra auga) eða hjá 39.6% (1). Þessi sjúkdómur leggst fyrst og fremst á gamalt fólk, sést oftast fyrst í kringum sextugt og verður algengari og alvarlegri með vaxandi aldri. Ellihrörnun í augnbotnum er flokkuð eftir útlitsbreytingum í augnbotnum í tvo aðalflokka, þ.e. þurra (atrophic) og vota (exudative) ellihrörnun. Orsakir ellihrörnunar eru ekki þekktar. Við þurra ellihrörnun sjást aðallega þrenns konar breytingar í augnbotnum. ...
