In this study we describe the prevalence of symptoms in different anatomical regions among workers in eight fish fillet plants in Iceland and compare it to the prevalence of symptoms among a random sample of the Icelandic population. A questionnaire, developed by a working group supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, was sent by mail to the workers and the subjects of the population sample. The participation rate was 67.6% among the workers. In general the workers had more symptoms than the referents. The relative risk for symptoms in wrists, shoulders, fingers and upper back during the last 12 months was twofold or higher. The relative risk for symptoms which had hindered work at home or at the work place was highest for upper back, wrists, neck, hips and low back among men and for ankles, hips, neck and low back among women. Twenty five per cent of the female workers had been treated for complaints in shoulders compared to 17.5% in the population sample during the last 12 months. Among the men the figures for these complains were 18.9% compared to 7.7% in the population sample. We conclude that the high prevalence of symptoms among the workers has a causal relation to the monotonous tasks and repeatative movements connected to jobs in the fish industry. Technical design has improved as years have passed, however further studies of technical solutions, design of knives and work organisation are needed to lower the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms Starf í fiskvinnslu er talið erfitt en lítið er vitað hvort það veldur óþægindum frá stoðkerfi. Þessi rannsókn var gerð til að kanna hvort verkir og önnur óþægindi væru algengari meðal fiskvinnslufólks en annarra.
