The intention was to compare the care during a longer hospital stay with midwifery home care following early discharge from hospital. The sample represents as systematic sampling of four hundred women who delivered in the period of September to December 2002 at the University Hospital, Landspitalinn. Two hundred women were selected from each group and the response rate was 62% (n=124) in the group of longer hospital stay and 67% (n=134) in the group of home care after early discharge. The instrument used was a questionnaire designed by the author and a part of it was translated and adapted from Elaine Carty´s and Ellen Hodnett ´s questionnairs. The instrument included questions on demographic data, mothers perception of provided care, for example, informational support (informational scale), satisfaction of care (satisfaction scale) and their attitude towards the content of service provided (service scale). Also there were some more specified questions for each group. For comparision of demographic data t-tests and chi-squared tests were used. Factor analysis was carried out for each scale showing high internal correlation and all items loading on only one factor for each of the three scales: information, satisfaction and service. Mean scores were used, comparing perception of care between the two groups. Whereas the distribution of data was not normal the nonparametic test Mann-Witney was used. Looking at demographical data there was no statistical difference between the two groups with regard to age, marital status or education. However, there were significantly, more primiparas in the group of women staying for a longer time at the hospital compared to the group of women receiving home care after early discharge (X2=5,7, P< 0,05). For all of the three scales mentioned, there was a ... Article in Journal/Newspaper Iceland Hirsla - Landspítali University Hospital research archive Smella ENVELOPE(29.443,29.443,69.896,69.896)
