Description
This paper examines the reason why Northern Khanty, who live in the Taiga area of Western Siberia, actively choose to wear fur even when its not for the function of protection against the cold, based on the author’s fieldwork data. There are many ethnographical studies about fur clothes of the Khanty, but they focus on the classification of ornaments of the clothes or the techniques of sawing and have not really discussed the mentality and sensibility in which people peal the pelt of animals and put the fur on their body. This paper also considers the differences in attitudes of how to dress and deal with the furs of several animals which were obtained in hunting and breeding, and what it means in their life-world. First, it situates fur-use within subsistence complex and gender division of work. Second, it shows the aesthetics of reindeer fur and relationships between individuals and their individual reindeer furs. Third, it considers the differences and consistencies among senses of value and behaviors toward particular sacred animals and their furs. As a result, the following three points have been ascertained as three reasons to choose fur, which are not for the function of protection. One is that the making and using of fur clothes are embedded in their subsistence complex, gender division of work, and local exchanges of furs. The second reason is that they find an aesthetics in the strong contrast of white color and dark color to accent the natural and artificial ornaments in reindeer fur clothes. The third reason is that animals continue to be sacred even after the animal has died and been used for its fur, and there is a method of thinking to ease the contradiction of wanting to use fur even though it is sacred in which particular sacred furs can be used when some parts of them are forbidden to be used.
