Düşünceleri şahsiyata varmadan şaka ve nüktelerle süslemek suretiyle sözlü yahut yazılı olarak ifade etmeye mizah denir. Osmanlı toplumu içinse mizah, sözlü anlatı sanatlarının en temel unsurlarından biriydi. Osmanlı kültür hayatında Tanzimat’a kadar neredeyse bütün yazılı mizahî ürünler manzumdu; ama Tanzimat’la beraber durum değişti. Bilahare Sultan II. Abdülhamid döneminin başlarında mizah dergileri sıkı bir sansüre uğrasa da tahttan indirilişinin ardından piyasaya onlarca mizah dergisi çıktı; bunlardan biri de Hayal-i Cedîd’di. Bu makalede, Hayal-i Cedîd gazetesinin uzun süre devam eden bölümlerinden biri olan Lügât-ı Cedîde başlıklı “yeni sözcükler” kısmını önceki benzerleriyle karşılaştırmak, dönemim sosyal ve siyasî atmosferine dair ne söylediğini tahlile çalışmak ve içeriğini bugünün okuruna tanıtmak amaçlanmıştır. Satire is to express one’s feelings either oral or written in a way decorated with jokes and humour. Though it seemingly aims at making people laugh, it is the very mission of satire to criticize the troubles in any class of the society, the malfunctioning and unbecoming actions witnessed, and thus to correct them. As for the Ottoman society, satire was one of the main figures of speech. Although there was a strict censorship during the early period of Sultan Abdulhamid’s reign in terms of satirical magazines and papers, there was a boost of publications following the dethronement of the sultan. One of those was Hayal-i Cedid of Mehmed Rauf and Ebussüreyya Sami Bey. This article aims at introducing a serialized satirical glossary (in the given magazine) titled “Lügât-ı Cedide” and gives the transcribed version of the serial along with an evaluation of the content.
