Consideration is given to the features of marking the ammunition caliber for hand firearms in imperial (inch) and metric systems, basic variants of cartridge designation according to outdated standards as well as the brand codes of ammunition of the largest European manufacturers of the late XIX early XX century. The paper gives a brief overview of international system formation stages for standardizing ammunition according to C.I.P. and SAAMI systems. Розглянуто особливості позначення калібрів боєприпасів до ручної вогнепальної зброї в імперській (дюймовій) і метричній системах, основні варіанти позначення патронів за застарілими стандартами й фірмові коди боєприпасів найбільших європейських виробників кінця XIX початку ХХ століття. Надано короткий огляд етапів становлення міжнародної системи стандартизації боєприпасів за системами C.I.P. і SAAMI.
