Geostrategic projections of the United States of America towards the Arctic (2009-2021)

Climate change has been the catalyst for a number of challenges and opportunities that have renewed interest in the Arctic. The region is gaining new international visibility and has come to be seen as an area of great geopolitical and geostrategic importance. It is an area where the interests of major powers overlap and where political tensions could have serious consequences for international peace and security. In this context, the United States has tried to position itself in the face of the predominance of the Russian presence in the region and the interests of China in this area. This article evaluates the main features of U.S. strategic projection in the Arctic, its economic and commercial activity in the area, and its energy policy in the face of the demands of protecting an environment as vulnerable as the Arctic. It also examines the way in which the US has consolidated its actions through increased militarization in the region and its aspirations to expand its maritime space there. El cambio climático ha sido el catalizador de un elevado número de desafíos y oportunidades que ha renovado el interés por el Ártico. La región está adquiriendo una nueva visibilidad internacional y ha llegado a considerarse un espacio de gran importancia geopolítica y geoestratégica. En esta zona se superponen los intereses de grandes potencias, y donde las tensiones políticas pudieran tener graves consecuencias para la paz y la seguridad internacional. En este contexto, Estados Unidos ha intentado posicionarse frente al predominio de la presencia rusa en la región y a los intereses de China en este espacio.
