Description
Summary:The Salair National Park is a new federal specially protected natural area, created in 2020 in the Altai Territory. The paper analyzes and summarizes previously known and new observations of rare and endangered species listed in the «Red Book of the Russian Federation», the «Red Book of the Altai Territory», and also assesses the role of the Salair National Park for the protection of populations of these species during the first year of operation of the Salair National Park. The list of protected taxa and their locations within the Salair National Park are presented and discussed. Twenty four species of regionally protected plants, lichens and fungi have been found in the park, of which 4 species are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Among the rare and endangered animals within the Salair National Park, 17 species were listed in the «Red Book of the Altai Territory», 10 of those are listed in the «Red Book of the Russian Federation». There are endemics of Salair and Altai, as well as relict species among them. In the Altai Territory, an endemic species of linden (Tilia sibirica) and the endemic earthworm (Eisenia malevici) occur exclusively on the territory of the Salair National Park. The expert assessment of the importance of the protected area under consideration for the conservation of rare species indicates the high potential of the Salair National Park in preserving and maintaining populations of rare and endangered species of living organisms. The largest populations in the park are characteristic of such protected species as Siberian Fawn lily, European wild ginger, common mezereon – among plants; medical leech, Apollo butterfly, peregrine falcon, crested honey buzzard – among animals.
