European Hospital Survey: Benchmarking deployment of eHealth services (2012-2013) Final Report

The objective of this survey, conducted by PwC Luxembourg in cooperation with GDCC, was to benchmark the level of eHealth use in acute hospitals in all 27 EU Member States and Croatia, Iceland and Norway. The total geographical scope is hereafter referred to as EU27+3. This study builds upon previous studies in the area, most recently the eHealth Benchmarking III study of 20111, hereafter referred to as “the previous study”.The survey targeted the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) of the acute hospitals. We used Computer-Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATI) with native-speaking interviewers. In total, we called 26,550 healthcare establishments within EU27+3. Of the 26,550 establishments, 5,424 qualified as acute care hospitals and of this number, 1,753 hospitals completed the interview.We analysed the results by hospital size (i.e. number of beds, categorised) and by ownership type (public, private not for profit, private). At a national level, we analysed a number of eHealth take-up indicators and for certain countries, performed an analysis at regional level based on the NUTS2 classification.
