The aim of the Forum was to explore the synergistic roles of soil conservation and vegetation restoration in meeting local, regional and global environmental and social challenges, and to propose recommendations and action plans for achieving these goals. The Forum was hosted by the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland, in partnership with Icelandic and international agencies, organizations and universities. It marked the centenary of organized soil conservation and land restoration in Iceland. With its extensive problems of land degradation and desertification, and its numerous success stories in halting severe soil erosion and in restoring damaged land, Iceland provided an excellent venue to discuss and evaluate the role of soils in sustaining society and environment. This book comprises the addresses and keynote papers given at the Forum and reports on the outcomes from plenary and working group discussions. The Rapporteurs overview outlines some of the main issues of the Forum, and finally, the book proposes a Programme for Action agreed to by the Forum participants.
