SI-Traceable Values for Cadmium and Lead in the Candidate Reference Material MURST-ISS A1 Antarctic Sediment by Combination of ICP-MS with Isotope Dilution.
Isotope dilution (ID) is an important tool for chemical metrology and has been in use since the fifties. Recently, it has been accepted by the Comite' Consultif pour la Quantite' de Matiere (CCQM) as a primary method of measurement. Inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a...

Inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a sensitive method mostly used for multi-element analysis and can be used to measure isotope amount ratios with typical reproducibilities of 0.2%. The combination of isotope dilution with ICP-MS allows to certify elements with an expanded uncertainty U of typically 2-3% (coverage factor k=2). The combination of ID and ICP-MS was applied for the certification of Cd and Pb concentration in the "Candidate Reference Material MURST-ISS A1 Antarctic Sediment". The uncertainty budgeting of this procedure was performed in detail and some considerations are offered about other approaches.
