Description
Summary:Background: Sheehan's syndrome (SS) occurs as result of ischemic pituitary necrosis due to postpartum hemorrhage. Objective: To calculate the approximate number of SS cases in Mexico and to determine an screening option. Methods: A search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar of published papers in English, and Spanish using the terms: "obstetric hemorrhage" OR "postpartum hemorrhage" OR "Sheehan in pregnancy" AND "INEGI" OR "Incidence of Sheehan's syndrome". It was calculated the estimated cases of obstetric hemorrhage and the SS incidence based on casuistries from three countries. Results: Extrapolating data from India, the total cases of SS in Mexico in the last five years could be as high as 322761 or about 2000 if taking Iceland’s statistics. As the measure of all the adenohypophyseal hormones is of 56 dollars in Mexican public institutions, the option to make and early SS diagnosis should be to quantify only TSH that has a cost of 13.5 dollars. Conclusions: SS could be a highly prevalent disease in Mexico and the TSH quantification is a feasible tool to make a massive first line screening in those women with obstetric hemorrhage grade III o IV. Antecedentes: el síndrome de Sheehan (SS) ocurre como resultado de una necrosis hipofisaria isquémica debido a una hemorragia posparto. Objetivo: Calcular el número aproximado de casos de SS en México y determinar una opción de tamizaje. Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda en PubMed, Web of Science y Google Scholar de artículos publicados en inglés y español utilizando los términos: "hemorragia obstétrica" OR "hemorragia posparto" OR "Sheehan in pregnant" AND "INEGI" OR "Incidence of síndrome de Sheehan".
