New Zealand is a group of islands about the same size as Japan, with a population of 3.4 million. In the South Pacific about halfway between the Equator and the South Pole, it was colonized around a thousand years ago in a series of migrations by Maori people from the Pacific Islands to the North. The next major migration was of British settlers, bringing the capitalist system in the first half of the nineteenth century. Today 79 percent of New Zealanders are of European and 10 percent are of Maori descent.
