Summary: | This is a poem which has never been published before. It is written from the perspective of an immigrant of color to Turtle Island, with love. Turtle Island is the location of the University of British Colombia campus, Canada, representing the unceded, ancestral, and occupied, traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Watuth), Stó:lō, Shíshálh (Sechelt) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations of the Coast Salish peoples. The poem speaks to the need for greater dialog and understanding of shared colonial realities and possibilities of decolonizational transformation here. Above all, it speaks to the need for deep respect for the stewards of this land.
