This is an ethnographic study on the First Complementary Survey of Indigenous Peoples of the Argentine Republic, which has taken place between 2004-2005 and which forms my master’s thesis. Consideration is given to aspects related to the design of the survey and negotiations around conceptual definitions such as the variable related to the land tenure system as well as the processes that led to the inclusion of the measurement of ethnicity in the state agenda and the organizational forms that were given for its implementation. Finally, the rhetorical figure of the metaphor is considered as a possible characterization of the relationship between indigenous peoples and state practices and institutions, understood as a complex, “in between” space, full of tensions, in which it is possible to reconfigure the place it occupies “ the indigenous issues “on the public agenda from the negotiation of meanings. El presente artículo propone un caso de estudio como modelo para avanzar en la consideración de la idea de frontera como una metáfora que representa las formas de relación entre los pueblos originarios y las estatalidades. Se trata de un estudio etnográfico sobre la Primera Encuesta Complementaria de Pueblos Indígenas de la República Argentina, que se realizara entre los años 2004-2005 y que conforma mi tesis de maestría.Se consideran aspectos relativos al diseño de la encuesta y las negociaciones en torno a definiciones conceptuales como por ejemplo la variable relativa al régimen de tenencia de la tierra así como los procesos que llevaron a la inclusión de la medición de la etnicidad en la agenda estatal y las formas organizativas que se dieron para su implementación.
