Тем не менее в последние десятилетия Арктика прочно вошла в орбиту национальных интересов Парижа. Политический опыт, накопленный на антарктическом направлении, дает Франции основания считать себя «полярной нацией» и претендовать на статус «арктического актора».Ключевым тезисом национальной арктической стратегии «Великий вызов Арктики. Национальная дорожная карта Арктики» 2016 г. является поиск форм коллективного управления регионом, которые могли бы стать привлекательны для международного сообщества. Ближайшим партнером Франции на этом направлении является ЕС. При этом большинство членов Арктического совета не устраивает сценарии управления Арктикой, предлагаемые внерегиональными игроками.Сегодня найти новые формы взаимодействия в регионе представляет собой для Франции не простую задачу: за исключением деятельности в области ТНК, Париж не относится к числу первостепенных партнеров для арктических государств. Попытки превратить «субарктический» архипелаг Сен-Пьер и Микелон в плацдарм для гипотетической экспансии Франции в Арктику являются довольно маловероятными. Экологическая тематика играет важнейшую роль во французской политике в циркумполярном регионе. Глобальный характер экологических проблем, в особенности изменения климата, подчеркивается как в официальных документах, так и в заявлениях высших лиц Пятой республики. В ближайшей перспективе при Э. Макроне Франция намерена стать мировым лидеров в области борьбы против глобального потепления. Кроме того, новый полярный посол Франции С. Руаяль имеет огромный опыт в решении экологических проблем и пользуется значительным авторитетом в этой области.
