Ectosymbionts of synanthropic rodents from Celestún, Yucatán, Mexico. New records of myobid and myocoptid mites for the Yucatan Peninsula.

The municipality of Celestún is located inside the Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Celestún (RBRC), in Yucatán, Mexico. description The municipality of Celestún is located inside the Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Celestún (RBRC), in Yucatán, Mexico. Because the natural reserve is diverse in flora and fauna, there is a large influx of tourists. In contrast, synanthropic rodents of the species Mus musculus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Rattus rattus Linnaeus, 1758 are also abundant. Rodents are recognized as carriers of pathogens that can be transmitted to animals and humans through ectoparasites. The objective of the work was to determine the abundance of the rodents M. musculus and R. rattus in homes from Celestún and to estimate some ecological parameters of their ectosymbionts. The capture of synanthropic rodents took place at 25 homes from July to December 2023. Eighty-two synanthropic rodents were collected, 59 corresponded to M. musculus and 23 to R. rattus. In total, 551 ectosymbionts were collected from six taxa. In R. rattus, ectoparasites of medical importance were identified; 42 specimens were from Laelaps echidninus Berlese, 1887 (Acari: Sarcoptiformes) and one specimen was from Ctenocephalides felis Bouché, 1835 (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae). The myobiid mites Radfordia affinis Poppe, 1896 (Acari: Sarcoptiformes), Myobia murismusculi Schrank, 1781 (Acari: Sarcoptiformes), the myocoptid mite Myocoptes musculinus Koch, 1844 (Acari: Trombidiformes) and specimens of the family Listrophoridae were identified exclusively on M. musculus, representing the first record in the state of Yucatan, southeastern Mexico.
