De cómo España abrió su ruta a la investigación antártica

Antarctica and its surrounding seas have a particular interest for scientists because they treasure up lots of information on the planet’s past and the evolution of its species. Isolation is the main cause of ignorance on Antarctica since only as recently as in the middle of last century began the truly scientific expeditions there. In the eighties a special attention arouse in the Spanish research community towards this continent. This phenomenon added to the political incentive of becoming a member of the Washington Treaty caused the installation of a base and the launching of an oceanographic ship. Since 1987 yearly expeditions are sent there with an average of 140 scientists who carry out research both on board the ship Hesperides and in the two settlements, King Juan Carlos I and Admiral Gabriel de Castilla. La Antártida así como los océanos que la rodean tienen un interés especial para la investigación científica ya que son depositarios de una gran información sobre el pasado del Planeta y la evolución de sus especies. El aislamiento de este continente es la causa de su desconocimiento y solamente en la segunda mitad del siglo XX se puede hablar de expediciones científicas. En los años ochenta en la comunidad científica española se produjo una especial atención por el conocimiento de la Antártida y ayudados por el interés político de que España pudiera ser Miembro Consultivo del Tratado Antártico, se instaló la Base Antártica Española Juan Carlos I en Isla Livingston y se construyó el buque oceanográfico “Hespérides”. Desde 1987 anualmente se organizan expediciones con una media de 140 científicos que hacen sus investigaciones desde el propio buque “Hespérides” y desde los dos asentamientos españoles existentes: Juan Carlos I y Gabriel de Castilla.
