Particular attention is paid to the issues of economic employment of prisoners engaged in mining. Usually the prisoners were involved in logging, and the settlers on Sakhalin Island had to work the land, i.e. engage in agriculture. True, both types of economic activity, in the objective opinion of the prison administration, were distinguished by low efficiency in the performance of the supervised contingent. This state of affairs has developed due to the geographical distance of the dead island from the rest of Russia. Hence, the prison administration, for the most part, could only rely on the natural resources of Sakhalin Island. http://agrarianhistory.com/archive/en/9 Text Sakhalin Agrarian History
