Ta praca analizuje obecność wzniosłości w powieści "Frankenstein" autorstwa Mary Shelley. Prezentuje ona najbardziej wpływowe teorie wzniosłości sformułowane przez Pseudo-Longinusa, Sir Williama Sandersona, Johna Dennisa i Edmunda Burke's oraz pokazuje, jak teorie te zostały zrealizowane w powieści. Celem tej pracy jest przedstawienie funkcji, jakie wzniosłość pełni we "Frankensteinie" oraz, jak przedstawienie to koresponduje z teoriami wzniosłości. Praca rozpoczyna się od prezentacji antycznych początków wzniosłości w literaturze klasycznej i teroii Pseudo-Longinusa. Następnie ukazuje, jak rozumienie wzniosłości zmieniało się na przestrzeni wieków oraz wyjaśnia wpływ zarówno prac z zakresu teorii sztuki jak i filozofii. Druga część pracy skupia się na analizie przykładów wzniosłości we "Frankensteinie" oraz przedstawia funkcjie, jakie wzniosłość pełni w powieści. This work analyses the presence of sublime imagery in Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein". It offers the presentation of the most influential theories of the sublime formulated by Pseudo-Longinus, Sir William Sanderson, John Dennis, and Edmund Burke and shows how they are realised in the novel. The aim of this work is to present the functions that sublime imagery has in "Frankenstein" and how it corresponds with the theories of the sublime. The work begins with the presentation of the antique origins of the sublime in classical literature and the theories of Pseudo-Longinus. It then continues with the development of the understanding of sublimity and explains the influence of both works of art theory and philosophy. The second part of the work focuses on analysing instances of the sublime imagery in "Frankenstein" and presents its functions in the novel.
