Celem niniejszej pracy było przeanalizowanie tego jak przedstawia się autonomia władzy królewskiej w Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów podczas panowania Stefana Batorego, czyli w drugiej połowie XVI wieku. Jest to zagadnienie problematyczne ze względu na to, że król był wybrany poprzez wolną elekcję i nałożone były na niego prawne ograniczenia. Za takim stanem rzeczy stoi myśl zwana „polskim republikanizmem”, w której polscy filozofowie polityczni czerpali z tradycji starożytnego Rzymu. System, jaki się wytworzył, był republikański, ale w klasycznym rozumieniu. Znaczy to, że władza królewska nie była absolutna, oprócz niej występowały inne instytucje, a sami obywatele szczycili się szerokim wachlarzem swobód. Poruszone w pracy myśli autorów takich jak Frycz Modrzewski, czy Stanisław Orzechowski zdają się, w pewien sposób, pokrywać z rzeczywistym systemem, ale również odpowiadać, dlaczego taki system zaistniał. Prowadzą one do wyjaśnienia, jaką rolę sprawuje monarcha w państwie i dlaczego jest ona ograniczona. Stefan Batory musiał zmierzyć się z ograniczeniami swojego stanowiska, a było to możliwe, ponieważ król sprawował faktyczną władzę. Udowadnia to przeprowadzona w pracy analiza materiałów źródłowych i literatury. Zaistnienie republikańskiego systemu i teorii chcących go rozwijać nie wyeliminowało rzeczywistej roli monarchy. The subject of this thesis is to investigate the issue of the autonomy of royalty in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under King Stephen Báthory in the second half of the XVI century. The topic itself is problematic due to the fact, that the King was chosen during the free election and his power was legally restricted. This state of affairs was caused by the “polish republicanism” idea, which polish political philosophers drawn from the ancient Roman tradition. System which has arisen was the republic system in traditional meaning, which means that the royalty was not absolute – except the King there were another institutions and people seemed to take pride in their freedom. The ideas of Frycz Modrzewski or Stanisław Orzechowski which have been raised in this thesis seem to not only match the reality, but also answer the question as to why that kind of system appeared. They provide an explanation to the role of monarch in the state and the constraints related to it. Stephen Báthory must have had to deal with the restrictions of his role, which was possible because the king has discharged an actual authority. On the basis of the analysis of conducted sources and the literature of the subject it was concluded that despite the arise of the republic system and the theories which wanted to evolve it, the King still had an intrinsical stature in the state.
