Les analyses d'eaux interstitielles faites dans les atolls de Mururoa et de Tikehau (Tuamotu) montrent qu'elles sont riches en sels nutritifs dissous. Le marqueur conservatif salinité indique une origine océanique profonde (eau antarticque intermédiaire) pour ces eaux interstitielles. Leur position dans la partie haute du récif implique une ascension par perte de densité après chauffage par le flux géothermique issu du socle basaltique. Le modèle de fonctionnement par convection thermique interne ou endo-upwelling peut rendre compte de la calcification récifale, des diagénèses internes, cimentation précoce et dolomitisation des carbonates.
