Nadine the unforeseen or how a hurricane almost made it to the Mediterranean
International audience North Atlantic hurricanes sometimes leave the Tropics to enter the mid latitudes, while remaining destructive. It was the case of Hurricane Nadine, which approached European coasts in the autumn of 2012. The track of Nadine was uncertain in numerical prediction models, with so...

The track of Nadine was uncertain in numerical prediction models, with some of them predicting a landfall over Europe. The forecast uncertainty is explained by the very sensitive interaction between Nadine and an upper-level cut-off low. A slight difference in their relative position leads to the convergence or divergence of their tracks. An ensemble forecast allows to deal with the uncertainty of such a situation.
