Hunting fostered by bounties was one of the main causes of its decline. Statistical hunting records published in old fishing reviews show the gravity of these removals within the populations. These old testimonies also show the relentlessness with which the otter was fought at the end of the 19th century and the means used to reach it. In a context of fish stocks restoration, the otter was considered to be a scourge as it was a nuisance to fish populations. As a consequence this species was hounded throughout the country. In addition to this first factor of disappearance, a second one lin¬ked to river pollution could be highlighted. Indeed, the growing industrialization of river banks led to the destruction of habitat and food resources necessary to the survival of the species. Today, otters are almost extinct in the country. Rare subjects are sometimes reported but conditions allowing the return of the otter in Belgian rivers are still not met.
