Forsuring av havet medfører nye utfordringer for biologisk forskning

It is well known that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has a greenhouse effect that affects the earth’s climate. Less attention has been given to the fact that inceeased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere acidifies seawater. Only recently the scientific community has started to realize that acidification of the ocean is a sure consequence of increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere (Caldeira og Wickett 2003). It is foreseeable that increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere will make the oceans more acid (Orr et al. 2005). Currently we do not have any technology to remediate the problem. Decreasing anthropogenic release of CO2 to the atmosphere is the only identified action that can decellerate ocean acidification.
