Comparisons between size distribution in surveys and commercial catches: a useful tool for monitoring changes in the size selection in the fisheries?

Technical regulations and by-catch criteria in the Baretns Sea fisheries. Proceedings of the 9th PINRO-IMR Symposium. Murmansk, 14-15 August 2001. A method is proposed for using fish distributions from standarized research surveys for estimating relative selection in the fisheries. The method is app...

Proceedings of the 9th PINRO-IMR Symposium. Murmansk, 14-15 August 2001. A method is proposed for using fish distributions from standarized research surveys for estimating relative selection in the fisheries. The method is applied on data for North-east arctic cod in the 1990-ies. Survey-related selection for the Norwegian trawl fishery is compared between years and between data covering different seasons and geographical areas. Some uncertainties of the data are recognized and discussed. In spite of this there seem to be a fair consistency among the data sources, leading to the conclusion that the selection on length groups near the minimum catching size increased considerably in 1998 and has decreased in 1999 and 2000. Possible reasons for this development are indicated. Conference Object Arctic cod Arctic Institute for Marine Research: Brage IMR Arctic Murmansk
