GLENN MAKER The American Legion Post in Ghicago Ridge is dedicated to the memory of Sgt. Maker who was the only serviceman from Chicago Ridge who was killed in action during World War II. He enlisted in the army on March 10, 1939) and served five years with the glider infantry in Panama, Iceland, England, and the Western Front. He was 27 years old when he was wounded and died in a Belgian hospital, January h, 19h5>. Dedication ceremonies for the Legion Hall on June 9, 19?? were high-lighted by the presentation of an oil portrait of Sgt. Glenn Maker. The portrait was donated by Elmer Hankes, an uncle of Sgt. Maker. Honored guests were his mother, Mrs. Mary Maker, and his sister, Mrs. Marion Brosnan. A phone conversation with Mrs. Mary Maker in March of 1980 gave us some additional family background on Sgt. Maker. She said Sgt. Maker was born in Ghicago Ridge in 1918, in a large house at 106th & Princess. Mrs. Maker herself was raised and then married in this house. Sgt. Maker attended grade school in Chicago Ridge and completed his education at various schools in Canada where his family lived. His father worked on various canals in Canada and on the Cal- Sag canal locally. Sgt. Maker enlisted in the army when the family returned to live in Chicago Ridge. Mrs. Maker's uncle, Henry Schmaelen, was an early president of Chicago Ridge. Her brother, Michael Hankes, was Village Clerk at one time. Mrs. Maker also served as a village trustee in Chicago Ridge.
