This is the first general account of the dinoflagellates of the South-West Attlantic. The areas prospected is the westernmost part of the South Atlantic situaated north of the Antarctic Convergence. Its western limit is the coast of South America and further to the south the meridian 60° W. The eastern and southern boundaries has been arbitrarily fixed, because of lack or paucity of sampling, by the meridian 45° Wand the parallel 32° S. There is a brief and critical account of already published studies of the dinooflagellates of this area. Next comes a short discussion on the general systematic of this group of organisms and on the complications originated by the use of two different nomenclaturial Codes. The main bulk of this paper is the concise description and discussion of more than 330 species found in the area as above limited. Data on distribution and ecology of each of them are also presented. Some 45 taxa, either found somewwhat to the north or to the east of this area, or found after the completion of the general taxonomic study were added after page 174. The unarmored dinoflagellates are rather poorly represented most probably beecause of inadequate fixation. For them the traditional taxonomy is folloowed. Thus Gymnodinium, Amphidinium and Gyrodinium are maintained as disscrete genera in spite of the author's bpinion that the differences among them seem too small, especially those separating the genus Gymnodinium and Amphidiinium. In spite of the fact that Balechina Loeblich and Loeblich seems well founnded, at least as a subgenus, all the species described under this generic name are allocated in the genus Gymnodinium, waiting for a general revision of the Gymnoodinium s. lato. A new family, Protoperiniidae, with two subfamilies: Protoperidiniinae and Diiplopsaliinae, is proposed. Protoperidinium subcrassipes is a new species. The family Gonyaulacidae is re-defined. The new genus Schuetiella is propoosed for the species which has been ... Other/Unknown Material Antarc* Antarctic Instituto Español de Oceanografía: e-IEO Antarctic The Antarctic
