Í fyrirlestrinum fjallar Gordon Lathrop um guðspjöll Nýja testamentisins sem boð um lítúrgíska endurskoðun, en að mati Lathrops hafa fræðimenn oft á tíðum vanrækt lítúrgískan karakter guðspjallanna og einblínt nær eingöngu á guðspjöllin sem heimild um hinn sögulega Jesú. Lathrop greinir guðspjöllin í þessu ljósi og kemst að þeirri niðurstöðu að þau kalli kristna söfnuði í sífellu til endurmats á stöðu sinni. Þau bjóða lesendum sínum að sjá „Jesú-þá“ verða „Jesú-hér-og-nú“ í tilbeiðslu kristinna safnaða.AbstractThis lecture was given at a seminar arranged by The Theological Research Institute at the University of Iceland on November 9th 2015. In the lecture, Gordon Lathrop analyses the New Testament Gospels as a call to liturgical reform. In Lathrop’s view, scholars have too often neglected the liturgical character of the Gospels and focused almost entirely on them as sources for the historical Jesus. Lathrop examines the Gospels in this light and concludes that they call Christian assemblies constantly to reformation. They invite their readers to see the “Jesus-then” become the “Jesus-now” in the worship of Christian assemblies
