Integration and education policies and their implementation is compared across the five participating countries. The conclusions are that despite common emphases in the national policies, their implementation in each country varies. The study participants therefore call for more Nordic cooperation, especially in the areas of implementation, research, teacher education and development of educational opportunities for immigrants. The second half of the article describes the results of the Icelandic part of the study. Although much has been accomplished in immigrant education in Iceland, there is still a way to go before the goals of the official immigrant education policy are reached. The article concludes with reflections on the possible counterproductive effects of the strong Nordic general welfare policy on immigrants’ sense of agency and suggests ways to increase cooperation between government organizations and researchers in the Nordic countries for the promotion of integration.Keywords: Nordic countries, immigrants, policy in the Nordic countries, integration, continuing education Í þessari grein er fyrst ly?st samnorrænni rannsókn á þætti símenntunar og fullorðinsfræðslu í aðlögun innflytjenda á Norðurlöndum.
