Welfare improves with more justice even if access to material goods becomes more limited. Since justice does not only affect people living at the same time but also future generations, any measure of welfare must be sensitive to the sustainability of society. This is a radical conclusion for Icelandic society at the edge of the 21st century, a society that is among the most unsustainable in the world. Perhaps the greatest threat to acceptable welfare in Iceland at the dawn of the 21st century is the fact that ordinary life relies on serious infringements of the rights of others. Mælikvarði á lífskjör verður að vera næmur á réttlæti. Lífskjör batna með auknu réttlæti jafnvel þótt aðgangur að efnislegum gæðum skerðist. Þar sem réttlæti varðar ekki einungis innbyrðis stöðu þeirra sem nú lifa heldur nær einnig til komandi kynslóða, þá verður mælikvarði á lífskjör að vera næmur á sjálfbærni samfélagsins. Þetta er sláandi niðurstaða fyrir íslenskt samfélag við upphaf 21. aldarinnar, samfélag sem er eitt hið ósjálfbærasta í heimi. Kannski er helsta ógnin við boðleg lífskjör á Íslandi við upphaf 21. aldar sú staðreynd að venjulegt líf byggist á því að freklega er gengið á hlut annarra.
